Freshman team scores first win of the season
January 4, 2013
The boy’s freshman basketball team started out 2013 with their first win of the season on Jan. 2.
The Colonials played host to the JEB Stuart High School Raiders. At halftime, the Colonials lead 22-21, but the team knew that they would have to fight to maintain this narrow lead.
“It was too close of a game at halftime. The entire team knew we needed to get our focus together so we could take over the game,” freshman forward Matt Huo said.
Freshman guard Deepak Jayachandran took over the game in the third quarter. Jayachandran scored eight points in the quarter alone and was able to set up other players for easy baskets.
“Deepak’s dribble-drive penetration in the 3rd quarter allowed us to get easy points in the paint, which served as a spark to our offense after a slow first half,” freshman forward SunLee Stechuk said. “This really made everybody on our team step up, which allowed us to pull away and win the game.”
The Colonials were able to control the game through the final buzzer, and the final score was 54-36.
“I feel like a big burden has been lifted off of our team. We have been looking for this win since the first week of December. Today’s game was a huge confidence booster, and we are looking forward to continuing this success,” Jayachandran said.
