Jefferson’s girls freshman basketball team wins 39-4 against the Yorktown High School Patriots on Friday, Dec. 13th at Jefferson.
Before this game, the Jefferson girls basketball team had a winning streak of 2-1. They also won against two schools in scrimmages.
“We’re two [to] one right now. We won two, we lost one,” freshman Sarayu Kannam said. “We went against Oakton [in our previous game], our score with them was 16 to 25, we lost by nine points. Then we won our scrimmages against Alexandria City High School and South Lakes High School. They were pretty good games, we won by a lot.”
Inside the team dynamics, the players are tight knit and also close with each other. They work together collaboratively and go together well.
“I feel like our freshman team this year is really good,” Kannam said. “I love my teammates, I feel like we can work really well together. So I feel like we could win [our match against the Yorktown High School Patriots].”
After this match, the team saw what skills they could improve on.
“I think we can get better on [having] more movement during offense and getting open better,” freshman Jackie Pritchard said. “Because I feel like a lot of the time we were struggling to find a person [to pass to]”
Prior to the game, the team looked at mistakes and learned strategies for succeeding in their game against the Patriots.
“We’ve been looking at our previous mistakes and previous games and improving [those mistakes]” Kannam said.
As the game continued, the team had lots of strengths which helped them gain a huge point difference between Yorktown.
“I think we did well driving to the hoop and getting good layouts, and also passing,” Pritchard said.
One problem, in which the Jefferson team encountered with the Yorktown Patriots prior to the game is the fact there was no footage uploaded from the Patriots previous games. All teams upload their footage before playing a game versus each other, to see the opponent’s weaknesses, and their strategies.
“I’m pretty sure Yorktown doesn’t have anything uploaded right now,” said Kannam. “So we weren’t able to [see the footage]. But if [Yorktown] uploads anything, our coach will tell us and we will view it.”
As the game unfolded, the gameplay became tense between the teams.
“I thought they were pretty aggressive, but I think we did well, just challenging them for the ball,” said Pritchard.
The players have a goal, which is victory, but many of them also have different things they are looking forward to happening in this season.
“[I’m] looking forward to doing my best and teamwork,” Kannam said. “Because I really like my team, so it’s gonna be a fun experience.”
