The award recipients for the Scholastic Writing Awards from Jefferson were announced last week. Students were given different levels of recognition of Honorable Mention, Silver Key and Gold Key.
There were 46 works written by students from Jefferson that were recognized, including six Gold Key winners. The regional winners are chosen by Writopia Lab, a non-profit organization that organizes creative writing workshops for young writers.
Four pieces from Jefferson will be published in the collection of the top regional submissions, “DC Teen Voices.” Sophomores William Liu, Mimi Nguyen, David Lanman and junior Anwar Omeish were honored in this category.
Omeish’s personal narrative, “Found Him in the Ballot Box,” was also nominated for “American Voices,” a Scholastic Writing Awards national publication. It also received a Gold Key.
“It’s an incredibly personal piece, so it was very gratifying,” Anwar said.
